Africa’s Rise: The Emergence of Mega Cities in Africa

New York, London, or Shanghai may be the biggest cities today, but have you heard of Lagos, Kinshasa, or Cairo?

Today, Africa proudly hosts two of the world’s 20 largest cities. However, by the year 2100, the continent is set to boast a staggering 10 mega-cities, introducing the era of “The Africa Super City.”

With a current population of 1.4 billion people, twice that of Europe, Africa is experiencing rapid growth. By 2050, the population is projected to double, reaching at least 2.4 billion people and growing three times faster than the global average. By 2070, Africa is poised to surpass Asia, becoming the most populous continent on the planet.

What fuels this unprecedented growth? The continent’s high birthrate takes the lead globally, with Africa recording 4.21 live births per woman last year. In contrast, Europe and East Asia reported significantly lower rates at 1.49 and 1.2, respectively.

The driving force behind Africa’s population surge lies in a select few countries. Nigeria, Ethiopia, Egypt, and the Democratic Republic of Congo are at the forefront, spearheading Africa’s rapid population expansion.

As individuals flock to urban centers in pursuit of livelihoods, the question arises: where will the majority of this burgeoning population reside? The answer lies in Africa’s ‘Super Cities.’

Presently, Africa’s most populous countries contribute to the continent’s largest cities, including:

Lagos, Nigeria: 24 million people
Cairo, Egypt: 22 million people
Kinshasa, DRC: 17 million people
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: 5 million people

The stage is set for Africa to not only witness a demographic revolution but also emerge as the epicenter of mega-cities, shaping the future of urbanization on a global scale.
